Muse
Black Holes and Revelations
(2006)
Muse is one of those bands that when you try and place them into a
category, you can’t. They’re such a talented band that each of their
albums creates a new genre that only Muse could comfortably fit into.
‘Black Holes and Revelations’ is a good example of this.
As usual, the band offers what could be described as a cliché when it
comes to types of songs on an album. Not to say that’s a bad thing
because to be honest, I would quite like to hear an album ranging from
ballad to heavy.
I’d say the closest they come to a ‘ballad’ is with ‘Soldier’s Poem’ and
the heaviest they get is with ‘Assassin’. Both great songs of course.
Would you expect any less?
Other highlights on the album are, ‘Starlight’, ‘Supermassive Black
Hole’ (which almost borderlines into ‘Scissor Sisters’ territory. How
odd!), ‘Map of the Problematique’ and ‘Knights of Cydonia’. The latter
being my favourite track on the album, especially when it reaches the
change in the song when Matt’s singing sends shivers down my spine.
I wouldn’t say this is any better than they’re previous albums, because
they are and always will be just as amazing. It’s about time I found
something bad to review!
I might as well comment on their latest concerts at Reading and Leeds.
It’s been said by many people, including the band, that they were their
best concerts ever. I think they’re at a very strong point in their
lives and they deserve all the respect they can get.
