The La's
The La's (1988/90)

Without this album, chances are we would not have Oasis – as we know them. I have no doubt Noel Gallagher would have still wrote tunes, but what would he know about a perfect pop melody if it wasn’t for this brilliant debut, and only album by Lee Mavers and his Scouse four piece The La’s.
It’s a very simple album, simple drum beats, simple chords – most of the songs only hit the two and a half minute mark and are all dominated my Mavers’ acoustic playing. John Power adds the baselines and the lovely harmonies with Mavers, all of which help the songs sweep you away as you listen. This is simply one of the best albums of the 80’s...and contrary to popular belief, there were a few other good ‘uns! But this one can certainly be credited as one of the best, if not THE best.
From the opening chords of ‘Son Of A Gun’ which is one of the standout tracks on the album – you know your in for a treat. The rest of the album sails along in similar fashion…and by the time we’ve hit track 5 – the timeless classic ‘There She Goes’, The La’s have already cemented a place in your heart. Track 7 is also delightful, ‘Feelin’ will make you think you’re listening to something out of the 60’s, but that’s what the foundations of this band are built upon – fuck The Byrds; for classic jingle-jangle straight forward pop melodies, look no further than this classic album.
