We Are
Scientists
With Love &
Squalor
(2005)
After seeing this band supporting The Editors on a gig at Loughborough
Students Union, I had to hear more and was rewarded when I bought their
debut album "With Love and Squalor". Mixing relaxed rock and punk songs,
We Are Scientists are a sure hit with the British fans, approaching
these islands from across the pond at exactly the right time.
Quite rightly so, they are starting to hit the mainstream stores in
force, and are starting their own tour later this year. The album itself
varies from the punky "Callbacks", "The Scene Is Dead" and "Inaction",
to the more laid back rock of "The Great Escape" and "Can't Lose". It is
generally fast paced throughout, but all the time great to sing or play
along to and features simple but effective playing from Keith Murray
(vocals/guitar), supported by punchy bass from Chris Cain and sharp
drumming from Michael Tapper.
The main stand-out tracks for me are "The Scene Is Dead" and "Inaction"
both of which support basic riffs with solids bass lines and imaginative
lyrics. All of the tracks however are open to all sub-genres within the
“Alternative” scene, mixing commercial influences with their own unique
clean-cut sound. Think Bloc Party meets Hard-Fi, this band are going to
be well up there with the Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks.
