'Score' - 20th Anniversary Tour (Live
DVD)
Most bands that have been around for 20 years would have either quit a
long time ago, or they would simply be producing music that was nowhere
near as good as the original golden classics they first created.
However, with Dream Theater, things just keep getting better and better.
What a great way to celebrate this by releasing a live concert on DVD
for the enthralled fans to drool over.
When I first got this, I had high expectations. I assumed that as usual,
the quality of the music being played, would be fantastic. Funnily
enough, my level of standard for Dream Theater has gone up! I didn’t
think it was possible.
The concert is 3 hours long, which is typical of DT. It’s filled with
all of their best songs, although it was missing some of my favourites.
But to put it simply, this is because they have way too many good songs
to cram into one concert.
The highlight of the concert was both the ending tracks of each set. The
first being The Spirit Carries On. As a track itself, it’s amazing. When
released live a few years back on their DVD, Live Scenes From New York,
it was pushed into a new realm of ‘amazingness’. But on this release,
it’s just so much better, so much tighter, and the sound quality is ten
times better.
The second highlight is the 26 minute epic ‘Octavarium’. According to
the band, this is the best song they’ve ever written, and in my opinion,
they’re right. Or at least not far off.
I must add that for the second set, the band is accompanied by an
orchestra. To be honest, you can’t really hear them throughout the
concert, but I’m impressed that they managed to keep up with Dream
Theater’s ridiculous time signatures.
The documentary that comes with the DVD follows the 20 year journey,
where I learnt a lot of things about the band. It was surprising to find
out that they had almost split up a few times. Thank god they didn’t.
A simply brilliant DVD that I would definitely recommend to DT fans, but
also to musicians and passionate listeners. You’ll be blown away by the
talent coming from these 5 guys.
