Arctic Monkeys
Leave Before the Lights Come On (2006)
It doesn't take the Arctic Monkeys long to get back into
the studio to record another single, this time with completely new
material. The single consists of their own work 'Leave Before the Lights
Come On' and 2 covers, 'Put Your Dukes Up John' by The Little Flames and
'Baby I'm Yours' by Barbara Lewis.
The single itself is really catchy, and for me, on first listen I took
to it straight away. It has to be said that it is very similar in style
and lyrical workings to the songs that are on their debut album 'Whatever
People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'. Front man Alex Turner has
apparently stated in an interview that the song could have easily been
on the album, so thought that it would be ideal to release it as the
last single before they start recording their new album this month
(August '06).
This therefore clears up that it will not be the first release from the
new album, and we should be looking out for something different when
their second album is released next year.
But that aside, this is a really solid song and the sections of the song
all fit together really well. The stand out features of this song to me
is the powerful drumming patterns that run through the intro and verses.
The whole song continues on that very familiar Arctic Monkeys sound, and
would be instantly recognisable if you were to remove the vocals.
Tracks 2 and 3 are totally contrasting, 'Put Your Dukes Up John' being
very rock-esque and 'Baby I'm Yours' a really lovely, string accompanied
song which collaborates with front man Oisin Leech from The 747's. This
track makes you think twice about who you are actually listening too,
believe me, you won't think its the Arctic Monkeys. It's quite lovely,
and a great inclusion to have on the single.
