Oasis
Whatever (1994)
This single bridged the gap between the albums Definitely
Maybe and (What’s The Story) Morning Glory. It has the sound of a
perfect Christmas single (which it was) and paved the way for Oasis’
future success.
This song
was written in the same period as Noel wrote the Definitely Maybe album,
though I’d imagine it was left off simply because it wouldn’t have
fitted in with the album’s rock n roll nature. Not that this song isn’t
rock n roll, because it is. Lyrically and musically, this song
encapsulates what Oasis is all about, from the acoustic strum which
opens the song, the anthemic strings, and the carefree lyrics and
delivery from Liam. The outro to the song is just magic, one of my
favourite music moments.
The other songs offered here are '(It’s Good) To Be Free', the beautiful
'Half The World Away' and 'Slide Away', just as if to remind everyone how
good Definitely Maybe was.
