Oasis
Wonderwall (1995)
To call this single seminal would be an understatement.
This song paved the way for Oasis’ fame and fortune, and for perhaps one
year – being the biggest band in the world.
This gentle acoustic ballad is by now regarded as one of the finest
songs of all time, and yet only got to number 2 in the UK singles chart,
but more significantly it made the US top ten. Written by Noel and sung
by Liam (even though it wasn’t supposed to be), 'Wonderwall' is probably
Oasis’ most famous single; it features beautiful strings and Liam’s
tender but powerful vocal.
Also on the disc is the legendary 'The Masterplan', a northern soul
meets Oasis song titled 'Round Are Way' and the instrumental 'The Swamp
Song', which was used to open this era’s gigs. Even if it never quite
got as good as ‘Morning Glory’ era Oasis, we know can always go back and
listen – and it will always sound the same.
And that, my friends, is the beauty of music.
